100+ Photos

I was going to hold off on processing photos till my "to-be-scrapped" storage box was empty but DH wanted some to send out to his mom so I just HAD TO do it sooner.  By the time all was said and done I had 115 photos ready to go, not including the ones that I require two prints.  Picked them up today and now I have a fresh load to work with for layouts and other projects.  Yeah, and so inspiring.

Lovely View along Nature Walk

I am finishing up my "Creative Retreat" class by May Flaum at Big Picture Classes this week and am feeling pretty accomplished.  I've created more layouts than I have in a long, long time.  I also have fun pages in my "inspiration journal", cute tags to use on projects, lovely cards to send to family and friends, and even some journaling ready to go when I get those pictures ready to scrap.  I am so glad that I took this class.  It has really pumped up my creativity and May has been so great with ideas, prompts and encouragement.

Some of my creative time this week is also being spent on gearing up for Stacy Julian's class "i.Scrap" at Big Picture Classes starting next week.  We've got a bit of prep work to get done, another reason for photos to be processed.  I'm making progress with it and should be all set to go on Thursday when the class starts.

March begins tomorrow, where is the time flying away to??  I've got new classes to teach at JoAnn's, along with my "standard" classes of SDU and Paint 101.  The pop-up cards class should be fun, the samples turned out very cute.  The teen duct-tape clutch will be fun too, another really cute project.  I love to teach and hope the students have fun with all of the classes this month.

Attitude Change

As I've mentioned I've been taking Creative Retreat at Big Picture Classes which has helped me create a large helping of new layouts.  While getting creative with paper, photos and adhesive I've been digging into my rather substantial stash of products.  I've had a selection of "favorite" papers that have been some what off-limits and so they languish away in their storage bin.  But to create a few of these layouts I actually, GASP, used some of this cherished paper.  And you know what?  It felt great!  And I liked the layout.  Then I used some more of these special papers, then more.

Now here is the funny thing - I like using these papers and I like the layouts that I've been creating with them.  So why have I left my lovely, favorite papers hiding for so long, in fact years for some of them?  Well, I think I've finally changed my attitude about the whole thing.  I'm going to use those papers and embellishments that I've been tucking away.  They aren't doing any good stashed in boxes gathering dust.  I liked the stuff enough to purchase it in the first place, they do fit in my "style" and I can make them work.  So I'm going to stop hoarding these supplies and enjoy creating with them.

Cruising Along

I seem to be getting plenty of layouts completed and using lots of paper from my stash.  Even though I am using only paper that I have on hand I haven't really even made a dent in it yet.  I do feel great that I am finally letting myself dig into the precious hoard of papers that I was afraid to use - Chatterbox, KI Memories, Basic Grey and BoBunny.  My box of "to be scrapped" photos is dwindling so I will need to get some of the more current pics processed.  Yeah!

I have only done a little in my art journal recently.  Played with my charcoal pencils a bit more.  Did an entire page of journaling, which I will be semi-covering with paint and papers.  Had fun with watercolor pencils, tissue paper and Perfect Pearls on a couple of pages.  Planning on a bit of fun with Twinkling H2O's soon too.

I am excited to have collected a large set of items to work with for a mixed media piece that has been brewing in my brain for a bit now.  All manner of tea themed items are ready to become part of the creation I see in my mind.  Now I just need to get started on it, hopefully this weekend.

Food, Fun and Photos

The Orange Chipolte Chicken is the new favorite meal at our house.  Had to make it for the family last night as the big Sunday dinner, and yes I remembered to take a few photos.  I'm so glad that even the kids like it.  DS even asked for a third helping of meat.

Orange Chilpote Chicken with Lime Cilantro Quinoa

After a week of almost spring-like weather winter's snowy, icy, blowing mess came blasting back last night.  So the kids had a snow day and spent most of it creating castles and forts.  I love that they can create a castle with just a blanket and a few chairs.  They also put on a play with paper lunch bag puppets.  Great entertainment for a stay-inside type of day.  We also made Peanut Butter Fudge No-Bake Cookies.  Ran out of oatmeal so added more coconut.  Kids love them so it worked out fine if slightly too soft.

Working on still more layouts for Creative Retreat at Big Picture Classes.  It feels great get layouts completed and to have fun trying new things.  I actually used a "banner" for a title on a layout I finished today.  I also tried an interesting technique while embossing/debossing the cover for a mini album.  Can't wait to see how the final product turns out.  I also tried out a new calligraphy pen and some charcoal pencils.  Can't wait to play some more with both the pen and pencils.

Getting More Done

Between Creative Retreat and Embrace Imperfection classes at Big Picture Scrapbooking I've been getting loads of scrapbooking done.  It feels great to be getting those photos that have been stuck in my "to be scrapped" box out and onto layouts.  My kids have been excited to see the pictures and read the stories.  That's what I love so much about scrapbooking, sharing stories with people I love.

I've also been creating tags and cards inspired by the prompts and assignments.  There are a couple of tags I can't wait to use on a project.  Love that I'm using up so much of my stash of papers and embellishments.

Tag made for "Small & Lovely" prompt.

I love the feeling of being so creatively charged up.  I've even done a bit of fun painting.  My little notebook that I scribble down ideas for projects, layouts, cards, tags, paintings, etc. is getting awfully full.  I think I'll have to get another one while out getting the groceries this weekend.  Now if I only had time to work on everything my mind is coming up with.

Photos and Papers

Made an awesome recipe for "Orange Chipolte Chicken over Cilantro Rice" from Clean Eating yesterday.  I wish I would have taken a few photos of it ready to be served because it was so, so, so YUMMY!  It was super easy to make and beyond delicious, even the kids wanted more.  We had Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies for dessert.  All around a pretty delicious Valentine's Day dinner.  DH enjoyed it when he got home around 3am this morning, poor guy.

After working on all these layouts I realized that I am always taking photos of the kids and other things going on around me but seem to forget to have them processed.  My current stash of photos are from 2009.  I am making a good sized dent in these and feel like I might just get through all the photos from my "to use" box with this class.  I've given myself permission to process a decent selection from 2010 when I get half-way through my current box of photos.  Won't be long now.

Here are a few layouts that I've completed in the last couple of days.  DS loves to make faces so this layout showcases just a few of my favorites.

This one is of the kids and a friend playing on our swingset.  They have great imaginations and see it as so much more than just a swing set.

I also finished my class samples for an upcoming Pop-Up Cards class.  They turned out cute and I had fun making them.

Weekend Crafting

This weekend was just a little busy around here.  Lots of work needed to be done on my car, so DH was tied up with that Saturday morning.  I had fun at the monthly Class/Instructor Open House at JoAnn's.  I had fun painting cards and answering questions about the classes I teach there.  I especially like when children and teenagers ask about what I'm painting.  Love to see their interest and excitement in painting, scrapbooking or any craft/art.  They like to watch, see how something is done, ask questions.  Reminds me to be curious and try new things.

Created a couple more layouts and a few tags inspired by the Creative Retreat class over at Big Picture Classes.  The tags were part of a shimmer/glimmer/sparkle assignment.  Love this technique from Tim Holtz's latest book.

Distress Inks with Perfect Pearls

I used to have a hard time shifting gears from girl pages to boy pages but it is finally easier to do.  May just be that I've got a nice collection of boyish products to select from now or I'm getting the hang of doing boy pages after 4 years.  Here is the latest two page boy layout from this weekend.

That's My Boy Layout

I am enjoying digging through my stash to find product that I forgot I had.  I've been inspired to make page kits as I go through photos and products.  This is always fun, especially mixing and matching a variety of papers and embellishments that I wouldn't have originally thought would go together.  I've even made sketches of possible layouts.  Ready for more creating.

Scrappy Creativity

I love that taking the online class "Creative Retreat" at Big Picture Classes has my creativity on fire.  Not only in the scrapbooking department, but over all.  I've worked on a few more backgrounds in my art journal.  I've started what I think will be a great mixed-media piece to share my love of tea.  I sketched a cute, spring/summer scene for a large flowerbox I'm painting to put out this year.

Art Journal Page #6 - Background

And of course I've actually completed a few scrapbook layouts too.  I love that I am telling the stories for photos that have been waiting on me for quite some time.  I may actually make it through the selection of photos I gathered before the class began at the rate I'm going.  How fun, I may have to dig into older photos or even order recent ones.  I also love that I'm using my stash of older product.  This makes me feel wonderful, all the stuff I've bought that's been sitting around is getting used.  I may actually give myself permission to purchase some supplies for fun.  What a change that will be from getting supplies just for classes I'm teaching.  Especially since I am drooling over some of the new releases from Winter CHA.

Sugar & Spice - Layout #2 for Creative Retreat

I also started a mini album that I've been meaning to do for over five years now - my brother's wedding.  I was so worried about "getting it right" that I've held off on creating it.  But not anymore.  I've sorted the photos - which to use on layouts, which to use in the mini album, which to keep in a photo album and even which not to keep.  One of the layouts I've already created is using the "layout photos".

Good Idea - Layout #1 for Creative Retreat
I've also made some progress on my "studio" area.  The kids love having my studio and crafting stuff in the living room - not just because it is easier for them to get into it either.  I work on projects while they are playing with toys, playing on the Wii, doing homework or while watching their video or DVD.  I'm right there and stop what I'm doing to join them or they can come over and "help".  It really is working much better than having everything in the kitchen while they are in the living room.

I'm looking forward to what I'll be working on next.

Life Happens

A little hectic around here lately.  So hectic I somehow didn't realize that I haven't posted anything in almost a month.  Time to make up for that lack now.

1.  I have taught a few painting classes in January and so far in February.  Always fun.  Working on a new class sample plaque using fresh spring colors.

2.  We've had plenty of snow days in the last two weeks, like a large portion of the country.  The kids love it but are getting a little stir-crazy.  We have baked, painted, completed a papermache school project, organized toys and craft supplies, played in the snow and even done extra chores.  I guess it has been long enough when the kids are even bored with painting and creating collages with Mommy's supplies.

3.  I finished the class sample for an upcoming teen class - Duct Tape Clutch.  It did turn out rather cute and was fairly easy to create.  DD would like one in hot pink, black and Cheeta print.  Sounds like a good project for the next snow day.

4.  I am almost finished with the class samples for an upcoming "Pop-Up Cards" class.  I enjoyed making the cards and the fun pop-up parts.  Now all I have to do is finish the sentiments and add some more embellishments.  Using some spring-ish papers and really like the colors that are showing up.

5.  I'm taking the "Creative Retreat" class at Big Picture Classes site at the moment.  May Flaum is the instructor and I love all the prompts, "assignments", ideas, inspiration and interaction.  My Inspiration Journal is coming along nicely.  The cover is completed, my goals for class are listed (even a bit of embellishing) and my "happy color" page is done.  I also created a tag inspired by the assignment one.  Turned out well and I got to play with some of my favorite products - Distress Inks and Clear Embossing Powder.

6.  And based on the current other assignments from "Creative Retreat" I am actually working on putting photos to pages.  That's right, I'm creating scrapbook layouts.  I feel like it has been such a long time since I have done this.  I'm glad that the assignments have great ideas and inspiration, which has given me great starting points.  I currently have two layouts in progress and five more in the planning stage.  FUN!!

7.  I purchased a new book this weekend on my short stop at Barnes & Noble's.  I am so glad that I just happened to find it since it was not in the correct section of the store.  It is "Art at the Speed of Life" by Pam Carriker.  Love her work, so inspiring.  I knew that the book was coming but didn't realize that it was already out.  I dived right in and can't wait to start making some art.

So, that is what I've been up to recently.  I have been loving the free-flowing creative energy and all the projects that are coming together at the moment.  Now if I could only get the laundry and house cleaning to not interrupt me all the time I'd be set.
