Sunny Day

It was a busy and wet week around here.  We've had rain almost every day this week but a lovely sunshine-y day today.  I've been sorting toys, all the winter stuff, cleaning and trying to keep the kids entertained since they can't go out to play.  There was a bit of bike riding around the block but we all ended up caked in mud.  I did manage to get in a bit of background painting.  I also found some of my crochet hooks and yarn.  I might just play around with a new pattern book of crochet flowers I found the other day.

In Progress Background

The weekend will be busy too.  A new front door to put in, a set of bunk beds to put up, a bathroom tub surround to put in and if I'm lucky I'll manage to prime and paint DS's bedroom too.  I'd like to get most of the work downstairs done this weekend so we can start the upstairs remodel next week.  Should be a long summer of hot, dusty work.  But when we're done DD will have a nice bedroom suite and I'll have a lovely studio.  Fun stuff.

Weekend's Here

Had a good day to with the family today.  Spent it wandering around a large "outlet" strip mall.  We checked out some interesting stores and had a great time exploring the Coleman store.  The kids are so excited for camping now and have a list of things we 'need' to add to our camping gear.  We stopped at Sonic for lunch.  It was the first time for the kids and DH, they liked it.  I got to enjoy my favorite beverage - cherry limeade - super delish.  Then we visited "Little Bavaria" and had a great time walking around the town.  Quaint shops, lots of trinkets, ice cream and yummy fudge.

Once we got home we got busy boiling and coloring eggs for tomorrow.  Such a mess but the kids love doing it.  DH likes to make deviled eggs so everyone will be happy.  Tomorrow should be a quiet version of Easter rather than the usual crazy run-around town to see everyone deal.  Church, brunch at home, walk in the park and our first cook out in the evening.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate.

Coloring Eggs
I finished a new mixed-media piece this morning too.  Canvas board, acrylic paints and paper.  I wanted to do something with trees that had dimension.  I punched out scalloped circles from scrap papers, glued them together then onto my painted background.  I also have scrap paper for the ground and the clouds.  To finish it off I added a nature quote I like - "There is always Music amongst the trees in the Garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it.  ~Minnie Aumonier

Sleep, Maybe

The sleep schedule is totally turned around this week.  It is a short week for the kids and DH so we are having issues with getting everyone to sleep at a reasonable time.  Since we have some bedtime woe as it is this is not helping.  I'll be happy when summer gets here and the kids are looking forward to sleep since they've been so busy playing outside all day.

I made some progress on my "sleep" pages in my art journal too.  It still isn't quite where I want it to be yet but it is getting really close.  I have been having fun with my new oil pastels.  I remember playing with them when I took art classes in elementary school.

Illustration Friday - Journey

This is my take on "Journey" for Illustration Friday.  The quote is one of my favorites about tea and I immediately thought of it when the topic came up.  This piece is my first attempt at image transfer via ink jet printer and transparency.  Acrylic painted background, own photo printed on transparency, oil pastels for touch up, graphite pencil for added details.  I'm going to have to play around with the image transfer, liking it but it needs some work.

Good Weekend

Spent most of the weekend shopping, which is not my favorite thing.  Kids are growing so fast that it was time to replace most of their wardrobes.  Shoes, socks, undies, tops and bottoms.  Good thing our tax return helped with the shopping spree.  Also had to replace our toaster since the old one finally gave up.  DH is happy that we can make four pieces of toast at a time again.  I'm happy that I can choose how 'toasted' the bread is rather than getting a surprise each time I use it.

I did have one good shopping experience this weekend - craft/art item shopping.  I have an upcoming card class that I needed to purchase some punches and paper to create the samples.  I also picked up some gesso and a set of oil pastels, just because.  I took a little break from all of my projects and now it is time to return in earnest.  I'm excited to getting back to my "On the Street Where You Live" project and start on a "tea time" piece.

Also had a little snow around here this weekend.  Almost white out conditions at one point, yikes!  Thank goodness the snow didn't stick to the ground and the sun came out for just a bit before the day ended.  I'm ready for spring to stay around now.  While I actually don't mind winter I am getting tired of it, especially since it is mid-April.

Art Journaling and More

I have been playing around in my art journal the last two days.  Today's page was prompted from the difficulty I had getting the kids to bed and actually to sleep last night.  I could see the completed page in my mind as I sang lullabies to my children over and over and over and over again.  The other pages I've been adding to at the end of or in between projects.

I also worked on a layout based on a challenge from last weekend's online crop over at JBS Mercantile.  It is another cute and quick tea party layout.  I made the flower out of a paper doily and layered paper flowers, brad and some bling to finish it.

Another Tea Party Layout
After a gorgeous weekend and a mostly lovely week today was surprisingly cool.  It is cold enough that they are suggesting, of all things, SNOW.  Not at all happy about that, especially with the weekend coming up.  Blah.  But the weather people have been wrong before, so I'm hopeful.

Illustration Friday - Bottled

My take on "bottled" for Illustration Friday.  I created this one with water color pencils.  Had a couple of different ideas for the theme but this is the one that finally happened.

Start of Sunny Days

The last few days have been rather sunny.  Very nice, but worried we might still have snow pop up on the radar at some point.  I've been busy with a bunch of different things the last few days.  We've gone bike riding, started cleaning the front yard (again) and I'm attempting to tackle spring cleaning.  I've had a few spare moments here and there - enough to play in my art journal, create a layout and make a card.

Art Journal Pages
I had fun making letters and coloring them in with water color pencils.  Forgot how much fun it is to work with the water color pencils and crayons.  Love the smudgy look I can get.

I had to rework a layout I made on Saturday.  Something just kept bugging me so I took the embellishments off and redid it.  I am happier with it now, including vintage buttons always helps.  This layout was inspired by the timed challenge at the online crop over at Jenni Bowlin's site.  I even made a card using some of the left over bits and pieces.

More Than Normal Saturday

It was a busy Saturday today.  Had a painting class to teach, instructor open house to create & chat at, then a pop-up card making class to teach starting at 10am this morning.  Love teaching, had such fun.  Also had a good time at during the open house answering questions about painting, scrapbooking and card making.  Actually had a few requests to add a more advanced painting class.  I think I might be ready to do so after teaching the 101 class and project based ones for over a year now.

I also worked on the next phase of my "Street Where You Live" mixed media piece today too.  So much I want to do with this but I have to remind myself to go one step at a time.  I am going to watch "My Fair Lady" tomorrow for more inspiration.

I also dropped in to the online crop at JBS Mercantile tonight.  The scavenger hunt was fun and I got plenty of inspiration from the challenges.  The best part was chatting with everyone in the chatroom.  This was a nice way to scrapbook and chat at the same time, almost like going to a "real" crop.  Met some nice people that I look forward to chatting with again in the future.  Here is one of the layouts I worked on based on a challenge.  I need to add some details and a bit of journaling but it is almost completed.

Autumn Girl
Tomorrow I will be getting the house and the kids ready for the upcoming week.  Amazing how much stuff piles up when you are out for the day.  I think I might bake some cookies too - Oatmeal Scotchies sound pretty yummy at the moment.

Illustration Friday - Duet

Spring Duet

I finally decided to create something for Illustration Friday this week.  The topic this week is "Duet" and I had an idea for it right away.  We have a pair of cardinals that have been serenading us for the past week from their comfy nest somewhere in one of our backyard trees.  So I painted the scene, added a few flower brads and a printed transparency frame to highlight the couple and complete.  There is a little spot in my hallway that could use a touch of spring so I need to find a frame for it.

The kids have been getting into the creative play lately too.  Both of them have brought home some cute projects from school this week.  Little boo-girl made a mask for Fat Tuesday and was able to bring it home yesterday.  She added some extra glitter and bling from my stash to make it "sparkly-er and bling-y-er" according to her.  Boy-o also brought home a cute project made with pasta.  It is the life cycle of a butterfly from egg, to caterpillar, to chrysalis, to butterfly.  Very creative idea.

Where did the weekend go???

Our weekend flew by and now it is the middle of my week.  I'm left wondering what happened around here.  It is partially from DH having a long weekend, which is very unusual, for his birthday.  He was so happy to have a few extra days off to spend hanging around the house with all of us.  I made him his favorite cake - "confetti" angelfood cake with cherry-vanilla frosting.  Yes, from scratch.  The kids had a blast and made a huge mess.  I mopped the floor twice because of the stickiness.  It was very tasty too.

DH with b-day cake.
Over the weekend I played some more in my art journal.  Added some painted flowers, a face and writing on one set of pages.  Worked on the background for another set of pages.  I had fun using leftover paint from another project for the additions in my journal.  Waste not, want not so the saying goes.

Art Journal Additions
Dithered about with a layout since last Friday.  Just couldn't make up my mind what I wanted to do with it or the story I wanted to tell.  I thought I was finally ready to work on some of DD's NICU photos and those stories but ... not quite yet.  DD looked at the photos of herself as the tiny preemie that she was and it made me all teary as I tried to explain how special it was that we were holding her in the photos.  I think if I can make it through one layout I'll be okay to work on the rest, maybe.

Instead of the layout I was hoping to complete I finally decorated my latest "daily planner" notebook.  I have used different "planners" over the years and I loved my Franklin while I was working though I still had a notepad for the constant note taking I did.  I don't really need the big guns of my Franklin at the moment but am at the point that I need to write things down all the time, or I forget them.  So I took a spare, hardly used, spiral notebook, covered it with pretty JBS Mercantile paper and journaling card from the March kit, added a few ribbons and now I'm set.  A pretty notebook to keep my daily to do lists, monthly to do lists, general notes and such.  I didn't realize how much I missed having a notepad to write down all the "stuff" that I need to track.

Daily Planner Notebook
I currently have a 12x12 canvas on my desk for a fun project.  Cloth Paper Scissor had this great theme for the 2012 calendar - On the Street Where You Live.  I had a concept pop into my head full blown for it but didn't have the chance to work on it in time to be submitted.  Now I am finally working on it and love seeing it go from an idea in my mind, to a sketch, to an actual mixed-media piece of art.  So fun.  It might be a slow process because I'm not sure which techniques will work for some of the things I want to do.  It is exciting to see it developing and pushing myself out of my comfort zone to create it too.

Not much yet.
